Chichester City Businesses welcome the start of Christmas on the high street at the market cross

| November 2017

The Chichester Christmas lights and switch-on event was organised this year by Chichester BID, delivered on behalf of its 650 city centre businesses.

Ian Crouch from Spirit FM hosted the evening and started by introducing Doug Price from Chichester Priory Rotary Club.

Spectators were welcomed by the PAZZ choir, followed by Sophie Hurst (Sophie’s Voice) who gave a stunning rendition of Silent Night before the blessing of the tree, by the Dean of Chichester Cathedral.

Colin Hicks, the BID Chairman thanked all the Chichester businesses for their BID members, which continue to pay for the Christmas lights and festivities. Colin also thanked sponsors Bray Associates and Woodland Crafts Event Management for sponsoring this year’s Christmas lights and fireworks.

The Mayor of Chichester, Peter Evans, also thanked the BID levy payers for their continued support. Special thanks were given to Doug Price of The Priory Rotary Club, which offers tremendous support to the BID every year by organising the Christmas tree and providing 80+ volunteers from the Rotary Clubs of Chichester to help with crowd control.

For the second 2nd year running the BID was also joined by volunteers from Chichester University and St Richard’s Hospital. The evening was rounded off with Carols sung by Chichester Cathedral Choir and followed on by the New Community Choir accompanied by the Chichester City Band.

Jeanette Hockley, Member Services Manager, said: “The lights switch-on not only marks the start of Christmas for Chichester’s businesses, but also creates real excitement and vibrancy on the High Street, as well as a sense of unity within the community, as the residents, workers and visitors all come together to celebrate the goodwill of the season.

“This event also helps make visitors aware of the wonderful shopping experience we have in Chichester as we strive to keep the city vibrant and prosperous.”

Chichester BID is very grateful for the generosity of Beaver Tool Hire which provided road closure signage. Our thanks also go out to all those who continue to support this Christmas celebratory event such as Concept Audio, All Event Radio Hire, Stage Coach, Spirit FM, Sussex Police, West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, St John Ambulance and all the local authorities who help organise this joyous event.

Don’t forget Christmas late night shopping is on every Thursday with a long list of entertainments planned in the lead up to Christmas. Visit chichesterbid.co.uk/christmas for the full events programme.
