A Christmas Update

For months the BID Team have been preparing for Christmas, to light up the city centre on your behalf.  Negotiations on costs have been keen and the Team have managed to obtain more bang for your levy buck, ensuring value for money, more extensive displays, higher specifications and quality. This year we’ll seen more lights, in more areas. So here’s an illuminating update for you regarding what’s in store for this year’s display:

  • Wider cross street decorations featuring fabulous 3D chandeliers
  • Motif wall mounts
  • Motif wall mounts

  • Cathedral Trees: Animated Boa’s
  • Sparkling Trees in Eastgate
  • Sparkling Tree in Little London
  • Sparkling Tree outside Marks and Spencers

2018 Christmas Lights ‘Soft Launch’

The BID Team will not be hosting or organising the Official Christmas Lights Switch-On event this year.  This event involves a huge amount of coordination and funding for what is essentially a 2 – 3 hour event (after business hours) on one night of the year, with very little conversion at the tills. Preparations and costs for this event include cover for health and safety ramifications, crowd control, emergency service access, police partnership, staging, lighting, sound, fireworks (this year the firework provider has advised against a display), event indemnity, public liability, marshalling, entertainment, road closures).

The decision not to host/organise this year’s event is down to the fact that it does not meet the BID’s objectives due to the lack of positive commercial benefit for the BID Business community.

The funds saved by not putting on an official Switch On Event this year, are being put towards the provision of a street entertainment programme for you. From the 1st – 23rd December the BID Team are planning a number of day and evening street performances. (Please note these street activities will not be performed every day of the week but are focused specifically from Thursday to Sunday). You will see a whole selection of street performances, adding a festive atmosphere onto the city’s streets, igniting public interest and encouraging dwell time.

To replace the normal light switch on event we are organising a “Soft launch switch on” this will mean that the lights will be turned on in phases over a period of time, starting with the side streets from October and leading up to the illumination of the main streets from the end of November.
