In My View – Brendon Cook: Chichester is a thriving shopping destination

| April 2019

Spring is here! We’ve been loving the recent sunshine and watching all the gardens come back to life after the winter months. The magnolia trees have been a special sight this year. The longer evenings have got us excited for the warmer weather to come and spending some time outdoors.

Chichester has recently been included in the list of the top 40 shopping destinations in the UK. Retail consultancy Harper Dennis Hobbs included our city out of thousands and whilst we didn’t come top, that went to Cambridge, we are proud to be on the list. We were against some big contenders including areas like Knightsbridge, in the West End of London and bigger shopping destinations like Westfield, in Shepherd’s Bush. It was determined by an index that ranks high streets using factors such as the number of upmarket shops, discount shops and empty retail spaces. The study puts the shopper at the forefront, meaning it takes into consideration the individual and what they want from their high street. Ultimately it is about how those living in these areas want to shop. The research shows that the small but flourishing cities and towns are a viable retail location for new businesses. So good news for us! We are always looking to encourage new business to the area and help Chichester thrive.

We know that online shopping continues to grow but it is good to see that people still value the high street and as a local business and part of that high street, we do our best to enjoy and support it. There’s nothing like walking through the Farmers Market, sampling local cheeses and homemade pastries. It’s also great to see a busy Chichester on the weekend and hopefully the warmer weather will encourage us all to get out more.
