SUMMARY:Hurrah for Shippam's at The Novium Museum
DESCRIPTION:Shippam’s: A Chichester Brand\nAdmission is free\, with donations welcome. \nBehind every jar of potted paste was a person\, a story – and a city. This summer\, one of Chichester’s most iconic names steps back into the spotlight in a brand new exhibition exploring the history\, impact\, and legacy of Shippam’s. \nFrom humble beginnings in 1786\, Shippam’s grew from a family grocer into a nationally recognised food manufacturer – all while remaining proudly rooted in Chichester. Best known for their meat and fish pastes\, the company was a household name for generations. But their story goes far beyond the contents of a jar. \nThis exhibition brings the Shippam’s story to life through rarely-seen photographs\, quirky adverts\, colourful packaging and real objects from life on the factory floor. You’ll hear from the people who worked the lines\, packed the jars and operated the switchboards – their voices captured through brand new oral histories. Visitors can even explore archaeological finds from the old East Walls factory site.

SUMMARY:Caroline Walker: Mothering at Pallant House Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Explore the beauty\, strength\, and unseen labour of childcare in the powerful exhibition\, Caroline Walker: Mothering.\n\n\nCelebrated for her luminous brushwork and moving depictions of women’s lives\, Walker transforms everyday acts of care into striking scenes. From maternity wards to nurseries\, her paintings reveal the tenderness\, intensity and resilience of motherhood and the often-unacknowledged work that shapes our society. \nFeaturing highlights from the past five years alongside new works\, this exhibition brings together Walker’s lively pencil sketches\, delicate ink studies\, intimate panels and large-scale canvases. Her use of light\, colour and scale creates works that feel both universal and deeply personal. \nCaroline Walker: Mothering is organised by The Hepworth Wakefield in collaboration with Pallant House Gallery. Shown within the unique setting of the historic townhouse\, this is a rare chance to experience Walker’s work in an environment that resonates with her themes of home\, family and care. \nCaroline Walker: Mothering is accompanied by an illustrated monograph of the same title\, published by Lund Humphries in September 2025. See below.

SUMMARY:The Female Subjects with Katy Hessel at Pallant House Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Join art historian Katy Hessel for a series of lectures dedicated to Biblical and mythological female subjects commonly depicted in western art history\, from witches to the Virgin Mary\, Medusa\, Eve to Aphrodite. Borrowing from the 1972 book and television series\, Ways of Seeing\, and its author John Berger’s idea “to start a process of questioning”\, Hessel will be delving into the evolution of these subjects: looking at their story of origin and how male artists from history ‘perceived’ them (perhaps perpetuating a certain narrative)\, and how\, if we look at them from the perspective of a woman artist\, we might just see them anew. \nThese talks are not to be recorded and are part of a working progress for an upcoming book project. \nEach talk will focus on a specific female subject from art history; \nThursday 2nd October 6-7pm – Virgin Mary \nTuesday 7th October 6-7pm – Aphrodite/Venus \nTuesday 28th October 6-7pm – Witches  \nThursday 12th February 6-7pm – Medusa \nThursday 26th February 6-7pm – Athena \nThursday 5th March 6-7pm – Eve & Lilith \nTickets cost £18.

SUMMARY:Supper Club: A Slow Food Feast at The Barn
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a four-course feast celebrating everything that is wonderful about Slow Food and the Slow Food movement. Inspired by Claire Thomson’s cookbooks\, the menu will champion seasonal ingredients from Charles Dowding no dig allotment\, and the deep connection between food and the soil beneath our feet. \nAlongside Claire Thomson and Charles Dowding\, we’re delighted to welcome Tom Brown\, who will share his insight into how and why great food begins with healthy soil\, and Nelly Hall\, who will be talking about growing in greenhouses with Tom – a brilliant conversation for anyone interested in cultivating and cooking food the Slow Food way. \nThis event is a particularly meaningful way to begin 2026\, as we start raising funds for Slow Food UK – our new chosen charity. After five fantastic years supporting UK Harvest\, we’re proud to begin this next chapter\, especially as we embark on our own allotment project. \nAs a highlight of the night\, Ben Sweet will join us to share his experience as a truffle hunter – guiding us into the world of scent\, soil\, and season\, and will expertly shave fresh truffles over one of the evening’s dishes. \nTickets cost £60 and can be booked here. \nMENU \nRibollita with Mushrooms \nInsalta Verde \nCaco de Pepe & Sussex Truffles \nVenison Mushroom Pappardelle \nTiramisu \n
