This summer\, one of Chichester’s most iconic names steps back into the spotlight in a brand new exhibition exploring the history\, impact\, and legacy of Shippam’s. \nFrom humble beginnings in 1786\, Shippam’s grew from a family grocer into a nationally recognised food manufacturer – all while remaining proudly rooted in Chichester. Best known for their meat and fish pastes\, the company was a household name for generations. But their story goes far beyond the contents of a jar. \nThis exhibition brings the Shippam’s story to life through rarely-seen photographs\, quirky adverts\, colourful packaging and real objects from life on the factory floor. You’ll hear from the people who worked the lines\, packed the jars and operated the switchboards – their voices captured through brand new oral histories. Visitors can even explore archaeological finds from the old East Walls factory site.

SUMMARY:William Nicholson at Pallant House Gallery
DESCRIPTION:This is the first major exhibition of the celebrated artist William Nicholson (1872 – 1949) in more than 20 years.\n\n\nSpanning Nicholson’s entire career\, this landmark show reveals the breadth of his artistic vision – from world-renowned still lifes\, insightful portraits and evocative landscapes to his poster designs and playful book illustrations. \nHighlights include the bold posters he produced with his brother-in-law James Pryde as ‘J. & W. Beggarstaff’\, his celebrated woodcuts from An Alphabet (1898)\, original illustrations for The Velveteen Rabbit\, works created during travels to India\, and poignant wartime paintings\, as well as his glittering still lifes\, which showcase his mastery of light and texture. \nVisitors can view rarely seen works\, and intimate depictions of family and friends – including a newly displayed portrait of his son\, artist Ben Nicholson. \nThe exhibition offers a rare opportunity to rediscover one of Modern British art’s most beloved and versatile figures and is accompanied by a new catalogue\, with contributors including Stephen Calloway\, Simon Martin\, Miriam O’Connor Perks\, Jane Pritchard\, Patricia Reed\, and Melanie Vandenbrouck.

Her use of light\, colour and scale creates works that feel both universal and deeply personal. \nCaroline Walker: Mothering is organised by The Hepworth Wakefield in collaboration with Pallant House Gallery. Shown within the unique setting of the historic townhouse\, this is a rare chance to experience Walker’s work in an environment that resonates with her themes of home\, family and care. \nCaroline Walker: Mothering is accompanied by an illustrated monograph of the same title\, published by Lund Humphries in September 2025. See below.

In this two-day hands-on course\, you’ll learn how to adapt a commercial trouser pattern to fit your unique body shape comfortably\, confidently and with precision. \nBring along your chosen trouser pattern (for woven fabrics only\, no jeans) and we’ll guide you through accurate measuring\, tissue fitting\, toile construction and personalised adjustments. By the end of the weekend\, you’ll leave with a completed toile and a corrected pattern\, ready to make trousers that truly fit. \nWhat you’ll learn: \n\nHow to take accurate body measurements\nHow to choose the right pattern size\nTissue fitting and how to assess fit\nHow to identify your own fitting needs such as full tummy\, flat or curvy bottom\, long or short rise\, sway back\, and more\nHow to alter your toile and transfer changes back to your paper pattern\nHow two-dimensional pattern adjustments affect three-dimensional garments\nHow to build confidence to make fit tweaks on future patterns too\n\nChoosing a pattern: We recommend a well-fitting or close-fitting trouser pattern in a woven fabric\, ideally high-waisted. Butterick B6845 is a great choice\, with built-in Palmer/Pletsch fitting guidance. Avoid loose or low-rise styles\, as they tend to hide common fit issues. \nIs this class for you? Suitable for confident sewists who have sewn a number of garments using commercial patterns. This masterclass is ideal if you’ve made trousers before but weren’t satisfied with the fit. Bring along your previous makes if you have them. \nMaterials:  You will need your choice of trouser pattern plus calico (2m)  and pattern paper (Our Swedish Pattern Paper is preferred)  Both available on the day in the store. \nAbout your Teacher:  Jo gained her experience in the fashion industry as a designer/pattern cutter in ladies’ outerwear. She has taught adults sewing and pattern cutting skills for over a decade\, from absolute beginners sewing to bra making\, simple pattern alterations to fitting masterclasses. Jo is an inspiring teacher and encourages creativity and confidence in dressmaking and sewing projects. \nClass Size: Maximum class size of 5. \nCourse Duration: 2 Full Days – 28th February & 1st March. \nThis workshop cost £240 and can be booked here.
