SUMMARY:50 Years Fired Up at Oxmarket Contemporary
DESCRIPTION:Oxmarket Contemporary are delighted that The Southern Ceramic Group will be with us across both galleries in November. \n50 Years Fired Up – the 50th Anniversary of the Southern Ceramic Group \nThe Southern Ceramic Group was started in 1975 by a small group of enthusiastic potters. Their aim was to enable potters and sculptors normally working alone to meet other like-minded people and share ideas and techniques. The idea worked so well that the Southern Ceramic Group now has over 200 members from Hampshire\, West Sussex and the surrounding counties. Our members are potters\, sculptors\, professional and amateurs\, teachers and students\, collectors and enthusiasts. The Southern Ceramic Group consists of keen ceramicists who live and work in the South of England and share a passion for creating in clay. The members are as diverse as the objects they create. Some have spent a lifetime perfecting their craft while others have come to it only recently\, after careers ranging from engineering to medicine to dance and teaching. What they all share is intense creativity and a love of clay.

SUMMARY:Caroline Walker: Mothering at Pallant House Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Explore the beauty\, strength\, and unseen labour of childcare in the powerful exhibition\, Caroline Walker: Mothering.\n\n\nCelebrated for her luminous brushwork and moving depictions of women’s lives\, Walker transforms everyday acts of care into striking scenes. From maternity wards to nurseries\, her paintings reveal the tenderness\, intensity and resilience of motherhood and the often-unacknowledged work that shapes our society. \nFeaturing highlights from the past five years alongside new works\, this exhibition brings together Walker’s lively pencil sketches\, delicate ink studies\, intimate panels and large-scale canvases. Her use of light\, colour and scale creates works that feel both universal and deeply personal. \nCaroline Walker: Mothering is organised by The Hepworth Wakefield in collaboration with Pallant House Gallery. Shown within the unique setting of the historic townhouse\, this is a rare chance to experience Walker’s work in an environment that resonates with her themes of home\, family and care. \nCaroline Walker: Mothering is accompanied by an illustrated monograph of the same title\, published by Lund Humphries in September 2025. See below.

SUMMARY:Hurrah for Shippam's at The Novium Museum
DESCRIPTION:Shippam’s: A Chichester Brand\nAdmission is free\, with donations welcome. \nBehind every jar of potted paste was a person\, a story – and a city. This summer\, one of Chichester’s most iconic names steps back into the spotlight in a brand new exhibition exploring the history\, impact\, and legacy of Shippam’s. \nFrom humble beginnings in 1786\, Shippam’s grew from a family grocer into a nationally recognised food manufacturer – all while remaining proudly rooted in Chichester. Best known for their meat and fish pastes\, the company was a household name for generations. But their story goes far beyond the contents of a jar. \nThis exhibition brings the Shippam’s story to life through rarely-seen photographs\, quirky adverts\, colourful packaging and real objects from life on the factory floor. You’ll hear from the people who worked the lines\, packed the jars and operated the switchboards – their voices captured through brand new oral histories. Visitors can even explore archaeological finds from the old East Walls factory site.

SUMMARY:Hand-Made at Pallant House Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Inspired by Seeing Each Other: Portraits of Artists\, artists in the Gallery’s Community Programme have reimagined their own self-portraits. \n\n\nNow in its 23rd year\, Pallant House Gallery’s Community Programme continues to thrive. This season\, visitors are able to discover more about the people who are part of this pioneering initiative through Hand-Made\, a collection of 120 photographic portraits. In recent years\, the Community Programme has focused on creating exhibitions that display artworks created by its members\, however this year we highlight its collaborative nature. The close-up photos of hands showcase our inclusive and creative community of artists. \nHand-Made takes inspiration from artworks displayed in Seeing Each Other: Portraits of Artists; in particular a photograph by Snowdon of sculptor Eduardo Paolozzi’s worn hands taken in 1988. As a collection of individual portraits\, Hand-Made presents hands that are used for creating\, caring\, holding\, protecting and living. Hands are both intimate and relatively anonymous and\, when presented as a set of photographs\, they symbolise the power of a shared experience. This collective artwork reflects how the Community Programme is unique in how it brings people together from different walks of life and experiences; the common thread being a shared interest in the arts. \n120 artists were involved in the creation of Hand-Made. Captured by photographer Tom Langford\, participants were given autonomy to decide how to place their hands and if they wanted to hold an object. For many it was a new experience\, and certainly a role reversal to be the primary subject of a portrait. A number of them chose to include art materials and artwork in their portraits to identify their own practice and share their experience of being a member of the group.

SUMMARY:Chichester950 | Religion\, Rebellion & Reformation
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition sharing the story of the Christian faith in Sussex\, revealed through people\, events and objects\, from 1075 to the present day. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTo mark our 950th anniversary\, we are delighted to present Religion\, Rebellion & Reformation\, an exhibition sharing the story of the Christian faith in Sussex\, revealed through people\, events and treasures\, from 1075 to the present day.\nThe exhibition\, which runs from 14th February – 15th November 2025\, features fascinating artefacts from across the Diocese of Chichester\, spanning East and West Sussex. Each object reveals remarkable moments and people from history. \nHighlights include:\n\nBejewelled rings and intricately decorated staffs and croziers owned and worn by the influential bishops of the Middle Ages.\nComparing a delicate bronze Medieval crucifix\, unearthed in a churchyard in Coombes\, with a simple wooden cross fashioned from duck board by a WWI soldier in the trenches.\nA pocket-sized Bible donated by the Sussex Regiment\, containing a pressed flower from Macedonia\, where its owner served on the front line.\nThe inspiring story of a group of wealthy and well-connected women who defied societal norms to help establish the first Anglican sisterhood\, The Society of St Margaret\, in 1854. Read their journals to explore how their tireless work brought lifesaving care to the sick and destitute in East Grinstead and beyond.\nMeeting Reginald Peacock\, a Bishop of Chichester and the first theologian to write in English—a bold act that ultimately led to his condemnation as a heretic.\n\nThese and many other fascinating artefacts will allow visitors to discover nine centuries of hidden histories and to reflect on the enduring role of faith during times of hardship and change. \nReligion\, Rebellion & Reformation has been curated by the Cathedral’s Canon Treasurer\, the Reverend Canon Vanessa Baron\, Visitor Experience Manager Rebecca Lewry-Gray\, and designed by Chichester-based design team StudioMoo.

SUMMARY:Rana Begum: No.1367 Mesh at Pallant House Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Acclaimed visual artist Rana Begum RA transforms our historic staircase with No.1367 Mesh\, her iconic suspended\, colourful mesh clusters\, creating a vibrant blend of history and contemporary art. \n\n\nThe monumental installation\, No.1367 Mesh\, crafted specifically for our historic staircase\, features Begum’s iconic colourful mesh clusters (often referred to as ‘clouds’). Each unique configuration brings vibrant colour and organic forms to the 18th-century townhouse\, blending history and contemporary art. The gridded material will spill over the landing balcony and through the middle of the staircase. It will allow visitors to experience the artwork from multiple angles. \nRana Begum’s work is known for blurring the boundaries between sculpture\, painting\, and architecture. It will bring a unique harmony of light\, texture\, and geometry to the Gallery. Begum draws inspiration from urban landscapes and traditional Islamic art\, using light as a fundamental medium to create immersive visual experiences. \nJoin us from 20 July to experience the magic of Rana Begum’s latest creation. In 2025 Rana Begum will be curating an exhibition drawn from the Pallant House Gallery collection to complement her installation.
