DESCRIPTION:Join us at The Novium Museum on Saturday 23 May 2026 for Elmer Day – a colourful celebration of one of the best-loved storybook characters of the last 40 years. \nElmer Day is also a chance to come together to celebrate the themes at the heart of all 30 Elmer books created by David McKee: friendship\, kindness and inclusivity. \nWith the annual Chichester Pride event taking place in the city the same day\, Elmer Day feels like a fitting extra celebration of being yourself. In fact\, The Guardian described Elmer as an LGBTQ+ hero in 2014. \nHere’s what’s happening at The Novium Museum on Elmer Day 2026: \nPre-Pride drop-in\, 9.30am – 10.30am\nCelebrate Elmer as a LGBTQ+ icon at The Novium Museum before heading off to enjoy Chichester Pride (you’ll need to book tickets for Pride separately\, via the Chichester Pride website). \nWe’re hosting a special pre-Pride parade drop-in event for families\, with face painting (£3 per child). There’s no need to book in advance for this event. \nElmer storytelling sessions\, 10am\, 11am and 12pm\nEnjoy a classic Elmer story in this storytelling session with Chichester Library. \nEntry to the storytelling session of your choice is included in the price of admission to the Elmer and Friends exhibition. \nBook Elmer Day exhibition tickets \nMake your own Elmer puppet\, 10.15am and 11.15am\nGet creative at these family-friendly workshops to make your own Elmer puppet. Experiment with different materials\, colours and patterns to create a puppet that’s as bold and unique as Elmer. \n£3 per child\, £1 per accompanying adult (advance booking essential). This summer\, one of Chichester’s most iconic names steps back into the spotlight in a brand new exhibition exploring the history\, impact\, and legacy of Shippam’s. \nFrom humble beginnings in 1786\, Shippam’s grew from a family grocer into a nationally recognised food manufacturer – all while remaining proudly rooted in Chichester. Best known for their meat and fish pastes\, the company was a household name for generations. But their story goes far beyond the contents of a jar. \nThis exhibition brings the Shippam’s story to life through rarely-seen photographs\, quirky adverts\, colourful packaging and real objects from life on the factory floor. You’ll hear from the people who worked the lines\, packed the jars and operated the switchboards – their voices captured through brand new oral histories. Visitors can even explore archaeological finds from the old East Walls factory site.

DESCRIPTION:Revisit the vibrancy and innovation that defined a decade!\n‘I Grew Up 80s’ provides a colourful trip down memory lane\, capturing what the decade was like from a child’s perspective when music was on cassettes\, shellsuits and leg warmers were must-haves and everyone received a Rubik’s Cube for Christmas. \nThe period saw huge developments in science\, technology\, fashion\, entertainment and the way we interact with each other. The exhibition will explore life before the internet and investigates the shared cultural experience of childhood in the 1980s. \nVisitors will find more than 200 items of memorabilia showcasing the youthful exuberance of the decade\, from toys such as Care Bears\, My Little Pony and Transformers\, to album covers of timeless musicians like Queen\, George Michael\, Phil Collins and Kate Bush. \n‘I Grew Up 80s’ offers nostalgic trip down memory lane for many of our visitors\, but will also provide an enlightening insight for younger visitors to see the differences between then and now. \nAs well as exploring what childhood looked like for their parents\, children can explore interactive elements of the exhibition including 80s dress up\, trivia questions\, games and 1980s themed toys\, including many old childhood ‘must-haves’!
