DESCRIPTION:Join us to learn how to create a beautiful tapered drum lampshade using hand-marbled paper\, papers from Japan and other exceptional papers. The workshop will be led by Jane Warren from The Lampshade Loft\, who will provide all the necessary supplies and guide you through the process. \nYou’ll have the opportunity to choose from a variety of papers and trims\, and Jane will teach you how to laminate the paper to create a panel and then hand-roll it onto a lampshade ring-set. In addition\, you’ll receive instructions on fixtures and fittings\, as well as guidance on creating different shapes and sizes. By the end of the workshop\, you’ll have the skills to make many more lampshades. \nPlease note that the lampshade you’ll be creating is a tapered/cone shape suitable for a desk or table lamp\, not for a ceiling or pendant fitting. It measures 25cm in diameter at the base ring and 15cm in diameter at the top ring. \nAbout your Teacher: \nJane Warren runs her small business The Lampshade Loft\, and has been teaching lampshade making for over ten years. She recently published her first book called The Complete Guide to Lampshade Making. \nMaterials: The materials for the lampshade will be available on the day. In this 2-day workshop run by Jane Warren from The Lampshade Loft\, you will learn all the skills needed to make these popular lampshades along with gathered linings and handmade bias trims. \nYou will be taught how to: \nDay 1 (Saturday 22nd February) \n\nBind your lampshade frame\nLearn two methods to gather your chosen outer fabric\nHand sew it in place using streetly (lampshade) stitch\n\nDay 2 (Saturday 1st March) \n\nmake a gathered lining using our soft chalk white linen fabric\nlearn two methods to make bias binding and attach this to complete your lampshade\n\nIn addition\, there will be demonstrations on making balloon linings\, various trims and advice given on frames and fittings. The methods learnt on this course will ensure your lampshade is finished to a high standard\, and you will then be able to go on to make more shades\, either professionally or for your own use. \nAbout your Teacher: \nJane Warren runs her fab business The Lampshade Loft\, and has been teaching\nlampshade making for over ten years. Her book The Complete Guide to Lampshade\nMaking was published in 2024 (Crowood Press). \nMaterials: \nIdeal fabrics for these lampshades are fine\, thin fabrics such as Liberty lawns\, fine silks and cottons\, quilting fabrics or Indian block prints or even saris. Please avoid heavier fabrics\, velvets\, jersey or other stretch fabrics. If you have a large pattern please note it may be lost in the gathers. Please do ask us if you are unsure about your fabric choice. \nYou will need a minimum of 50cm of fabric for your shade\, however we will be joining widths so if you have a larger pattern\, please bring more.
