SUMMARY:Talk | Curator’s Introduction to British Landscapes: A Sense of Place at Pallant House Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Join Gallery Director Simon Martin for an introduction to our current exhibition British Landscapes: A Sense of Place\, a landmark exhibition exploring how artists from the 18th to the 20th century have responded to the landscapes of the British Isles. Bringing together works by more than 60 artists\, the exhibition reveals landscape not simply as scenery\, but as a powerful expression of memory\, identity and emotion. \nSpanning Romanticism\, Modernism and postwar abstraction\, Simon Martin will trace a rich lineage from Thomas Gainsborough and the golden age of British watercolour to the postwar works of Wilhelmina Barns-Graham\, Barbara Hepworth\, Paul Nash\, and Eric Ravilious\, reflecting on how Britain’s landscapes have been lived in\, remembered and reimagined – and how they continue to shape our collective sense of belonging and resilience. \nYour ticket includes entry to the exhibition following the talk.  \nTickets cost £18 and can be booked here.

SUMMARY:Pop Inspired Portraits Workshop at Pallant House Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Explore portraiture through a Pop Art lens with award winning artist Wendy Barratt\, creating bold and expressive works inspired by the Pop and the Figure exhibition at Pallant House Gallery. \n\n\nIn this one-day workshop\, you’ll work directly from a live model\, using drawing techniques to develop striking\, pop-inspired portraits. Through a series of guided exercises\, you’ll explore ways to simplify and exaggerate features\, experimenting with line\, tone\, pattern and composition to create dynamic images. \nIn the afternoon\, you’ll build on these approaches to develop a more resolved piece\, with guidance on working confidently and expressively in drawing. Wendy will share techniques for translating observation into bold\, stylised portraits\, encouraging you to balance accuracy with creative interpretation. \nDuring the day\, you’ll also have the opportunity to visit the exhibition\, exploring how artists associated with Pop Art have reimagined the figure through colour\, pattern and visual language. \nSuitable for all levels\, this workshop offers a supportive and exploratory environment. By the end of the session\, you will have produced a series of studies and a finished pop-inspired portrait to take home. \nTickets cost £120 and can be booked here.

SUMMARY:Thursday Late | Celebrating Pride at Pallant House Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our fifth annual evening of performance\, art and celebration in collaboration with Chichester Pride\, a volunteer led organisation created to support the local LGBTQIA+ community and its allies. This event is very popular so book early to avoid disappointment. \n\n\nEnjoy free access to the galleries and the latest exhibition British Landscapes: A Sense of Place accompanied by exciting creative activities\, tours and\, from 7pm\, an incredible line-up of entertainment in the courtyard. Click here to see the full schedule. \nAt 6pm\, you can also join Mollie Barnes and Gemma Rolls-Bentley\, co-authors of Queer Art\, for an in-conversation with Simon Martin\, Director of Pallant House Gallery (talk separately ticketed\, book here). \nQueer Art brings together a wide range of LGBTQIA+ artists\, tracing their work from the 19th century to today. Covering different generations and places\, the book offers an engaging look at queer visual culture and the many ways artists have expressed identity and experience\, beyond simple or stereotypical ideas of what “queer art” is. \nWe are very pleased that this year’s event is a part of the Festival of Chichester\, an annual month-long celebration of the arts taking place from 13 June – 19 July.

SUMMARY:The Female Subjects with Katy Hessel at Pallant House Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Join art historian Katy Hessel for a series of lectures dedicated to Biblical and mythological female subjects commonly depicted in western art history\, from witches to the Virgin Mary\, Medusa\, Eve to Aphrodite. Borrowing from the 1972 book and television series\, Ways of Seeing\, and its author John Berger’s idea “to start a process of questioning”\, Hessel will be delving into the evolution of these subjects: looking at their story of origin and how male artists from history ‘perceived’ them (perhaps perpetuating a certain narrative)\, and how\, if we look at them from the perspective of a woman artist\, we might just see them anew. \nThese talks are not to be recorded and are part of a working progress for an upcoming book project. \nEach talk will focus on a specific female subject from art history; \nThursday 2nd October 6-7pm – Virgin Mary \nTuesday 7th October 6-7pm – Aphrodite/Venus \nTuesday 28th October 6-7pm – Witches  \nThursday 12th February 6-7pm – Medusa \nThursday 26th February 6-7pm – Athena \nThursday 5th March 6-7pm – Eve & Lilith \nTickets cost £18.
