SUMMARY:The English House with Dan Cruickshank at Pallant House Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an illuminating talk from historian Dan Cruickshank about the research and stories behind his latest book The English House. Discover the rich histories of some of England’s most fascinating homes — including our very own Pallant House! \nThis is the story of the superbly elegant early 18th century Pallant House in Chichester. It’s the story of 19 Princelet Street in Spitalfields\, built for a Huguenot silk-weaver\, ultimately a synagogue. It’s also the story of – among others – a row of two-up\, two-downs in Toxteth\, a block of flats in London’s East End\, and what Ideal Home’s magazine described in 1926 as Britain’s ‘first modern house’ – in Northampton. \nThrough these diverse buildings\, the talk explores how English homes have evolved over the centuries\, revealing not only architectural innovation but the stories of their first occupants: their aspirations\, their struggles\, their place within society and relationship with their local community. The talk will weave these two strands together\, blending architectural and social history to share a series of brilliantly observed portraits of fascinating buildings\, and shedding more light on the history of our special gallery. \nThe talk will be followed by a book signing with books available to purchase from the Pallant Book Shop.  \nTickets cost £18 and include admission to the gallery. Book your ticket here.

SUMMARY:Caroline Walker: Mothering at Pallant House Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Explore the beauty\, strength\, and unseen labour of childcare in the powerful exhibition\, Caroline Walker: Mothering.\n\n\nCelebrated for her luminous brushwork and moving depictions of women’s lives\, Walker transforms everyday acts of care into striking scenes. From maternity wards to nurseries\, her paintings reveal the tenderness\, intensity and resilience of motherhood and the often-unacknowledged work that shapes our society. \nFeaturing highlights from the past five years alongside new works\, this exhibition brings together Walker’s lively pencil sketches\, delicate ink studies\, intimate panels and large-scale canvases. Her use of light\, colour and scale creates works that feel both universal and deeply personal. \nCaroline Walker: Mothering is organised by The Hepworth Wakefield in collaboration with Pallant House Gallery. Shown within the unique setting of the historic townhouse\, this is a rare chance to experience Walker’s work in an environment that resonates with her themes of home\, family and care. \nCaroline Walker: Mothering is accompanied by an illustrated monograph of the same title\, published by Lund Humphries in September 2025. See below.

SUMMARY:Art History Course | Homage at Pallant House Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Join our curators and special guest Colin Wiggins\, artist and former Special Projects Curator at the National Gallery\, for a new series of thought-provoking art history lectures; In the Company of Artists. \nIn this session\, Homage: Tracing Artistic Lineage\, Pallant House Gallery curator Miriam O’Connor Perks will explore the theme of homage in portraiture\, focusing on how artists featured in the exhibition pay tribute to those who came before them—through style\, subject\, and subtle visual reference. \nColin Wiggins\, artist and former Special Projects Curator at the National Gallery\, will reflect on how contemporary artists respond to historic collections\, drawing on his long-standing work with artists-in-residence at the National Gallery to reveal how the past continues to inspire and shape new artistic voices. \nArtists have always looked to the past for ideas and inspiration.  Colin will look at some of the exciting responses to the National Gallery’s collection by artists such as Paula Rego and Michael Landy\, or Peter Blake and Bridget Riley. As Frank Auerbach once put it: ‘This is the family from which we spring.’ \nThe session will feature two engaging lectures with opportunities for questions and stimulating discussion\, plus a coffee break (refreshments provided) in between. Please bring anything you would like to make notes with and let us know when booking of any special dietary or access requirements. \n£45 per session or book all three for the discounted price of £125 \nAdd all three sessions to your basket to receive the discounted price when you check out. \nOther sessions in this course are: \nWednesday 24 September – 10.30am – 1pm Circles of Influence: Artists Among Artists  \nWednesday 8 October 10.30am – 1pm Face to Face: Collaboration in Portraiture

SUMMARY:Art History Course | Face to Face at Pallant House Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Join our curators and special guest Colin Wiggins\, artist and former Special Projects Curator at the National Gallery\, for a new series of thought-provoking art history lectures – In the Company of Artists. \nIn this session\, Face to Face: Collaboration in Portraiture\, Melanie Vandenbrouck\, Chief Curator at Pallant House Gallery\, will explore the role of modelling and co-production in artistic practice—looking at how collaboration and close creative partnerships shape the making of an artwork. \nColin Wiggins\, artist and former Special Projects Curator at the National Gallery\, will share insights into the creation of his Mutual Portraits series\, co-produced with renowned artists and offering a unique glimpse into the dynamics of portraiture as a shared experience. \nWhen he worked at the National Gallery\, Colin formed lasting friendships with several of the artists whose exhibitions he curated there. As a printmaker\, he made portraits of each of these artists but left part of the plate blank. He then passed the plate over to their subjects\, who responded by making a portrait of Colin in the empty space. The result is the remarkable series of prints shown in Seeing Each Other\, artistic collaborations between Colin and Frank Auerbach\, Paula Rego\, Peter Blake\, R.B. Kitaj and Maggi Hambling. \nThe session will feature two engaging lectures with opportunities for questions and stimulating discussion\, plus a coffee break (refreshments provided) in between. SUMMARY:Abstraction in Portraits: Exploring the Face and Figure in Monoprint
DESCRIPTION:Create abstract portraits and figures through monoprinting with artist Charlotte Cranidge. \nIn this dynamic workshop\, artist Charlotte Cranidge will guide you through the process of creating abstracted portraits and figures\, using experimental monoprinting techniques. Drawing inspiration from Ben Nicholson’s prints in our Seeing Each Other: Portraits of Artists exhibition\, you’ll explore the expressive possibilities of printmaking\, crafting striking and unique designs through hands-on experimentation. \nThe session begins with a visit to the exhibition and introduction to Ben Nicholson’s prints\, which will serve as the foundation for your own artistic exploration. Participants will then experiment with two key monoprinting techniques. First\, you’ll use stencils to block areas of your design\, creating bold and abstract shapes. You’ll also learn how to directly draw onto the paper\, further enhancing your abstract portraits with expressive lines and details. Through these methods\, you’ll focus on using stencils to block ink and form unique\, abstracted portraits. \nThroughout the workshop\, you’ll create a series of prints that emphasize abstract portraiture\, allowing you to experiment with various styles and approaches. \nThis workshop costs £75 and can be booked here.
