SUMMARY:The Female Subjects with Katy Hessel at Pallant House Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Join art historian Katy Hessel for a series of lectures dedicated to Biblical and mythological female subjects commonly depicted in western art history\, from witches to the Virgin Mary\, Medusa\, Eve to Aphrodite. Borrowing from the 1972 book and television series\, Ways of Seeing\, and its author John Berger’s idea “to start a process of questioning”\, Hessel will be delving into the evolution of these subjects: looking at their story of origin and how male artists from history ‘perceived’ them (perhaps perpetuating a certain narrative)\, and how\, if we look at them from the perspective of a woman artist\, we might just see them anew. \nThese talks are not to be recorded and are part of a working progress for an upcoming book project. \nEach talk will focus on a specific female subject from art history; \nThursday 2nd October 6-7pm – Virgin Mary \nTuesday 7th October 6-7pm – Aphrodite/Venus \nTuesday 28th October 6-7pm – Witches  \nThursday 12th February 6-7pm – Medusa \nThursday 26th February 6-7pm – Athena \nThursday 5th March 6-7pm – Eve & Lilith \nTickets cost £18.

SUMMARY:Abstraction in Portraits: Exploring the Face and Figure in Monoprint
DESCRIPTION:Create abstract portraits and figures through monoprinting with artist Charlotte Cranidge. \nIn this dynamic workshop\, artist Charlotte Cranidge will guide you through the process of creating abstracted portraits and figures\, using experimental monoprinting techniques. Drawing inspiration from Ben Nicholson’s prints in our Seeing Each Other: Portraits of Artists exhibition\, you’ll explore the expressive possibilities of printmaking\, crafting striking and unique designs through hands-on experimentation. \nThe session begins with a visit to the exhibition and introduction to Ben Nicholson’s prints\, which will serve as the foundation for your own artistic exploration. Participants will then experiment with two key monoprinting techniques. First\, you’ll use stencils to block areas of your design\, creating bold and abstract shapes. You’ll also learn how to directly draw onto the paper\, further enhancing your abstract portraits with expressive lines and details. Through these methods\, you’ll focus on using stencils to block ink and form unique\, abstracted portraits. \nThroughout the workshop\, you’ll create a series of prints that emphasize abstract portraiture\, allowing you to experiment with various styles and approaches. \nThis workshop costs £75 and can be booked here.

SUMMARY:Summer Art Club: Prints and Pieces Collagraph at Pallant House Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Learn how to create a series of beautiful images using a printing technique called collagraph*. \nArtist Educator Helen Friend will lead you through this Summer Art Club workshop\, exploring patterns\, shapes and forms from works in our collection and using them as inspiration to create our own unique design for a collagraph block. We might choose to arrange our patterns and shapes to resemble a face\, or a landscape\, or we might want to make a wonderful decorative pattern out of them. \nOnce our collagraph blocks are made\, we will then print them onto a range of different papers\, using specialist printing inks\, to create wonderfully unique works of art. \n* A collagraph is a collage of materials of various textures glued on to a printing plate. The plate is often made of thin wood or card. \nWhat is Summer Art Club? \nThis is a series of studio workshops for children\, exploring a range of media in a fun and friendly environment. SUMMARY:Some Men in London: Peter Parker in Conversation with Simon Martin
DESCRIPTION:Join author Peter Parker\, in conversation with Gallery Director Simon Martin\, as they discuss Peter’s book Some Men in London. \nThis two-volume anthology chronicles the history and reality of life for queer men in the capital between the end of the Second World War in 1945 and the partial decriminalisation of homosexuality in 1967. \nSeveral artists featured in our latest exhibition appear in the book\, which also draws upon private letters and diaries\, police and court records\, parliamentary reports\, newspaper and magazine articles\, medical journals\, films\, plays novels and poetry. It covers a wide range of viewpoints\, from both those who attacked homosexuality to those who campaigned for its decriminalisation. While detailing a community at constant risk of arrest or blackmail\, it also describes an often joyous subculture that thrived in the capital’s pubs\, clubs\, cafés and more public places of assignation. Meanwhile\, many people were unaware of\, or blind to\, the extent to which gay men enriched mainstream culture. \nPursuing this theme\, Simon and Peter will discuss not only the painters who feature in the anthology and the exhibition\, but consider other artists who made queer desire visible at a time when acting on those desires could land men in prison. \nAfter the talk\, you will be able to purchase a copy of Some Men in London and have it signed by the author. \nThis talk is part of our monthly series of Thursday Lates. Visitors are invited to enjoy our galleries and visit this season’s temporary exhibitions\, including Seeing Each Other: Portraits of Artists\, after hours and engage with other activities throughout the evening including a show and tell in the Library\, tour and drop-in life drawing workshop. \nTickets cost £18 and can be booked here.

SUMMARY:Hand-Made at Pallant House Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Inspired by Seeing Each Other: Portraits of Artists\, artists in the Gallery’s Community Programme have reimagined their own self-portraits. \n\n\nNow in its 23rd year\, Pallant House Gallery’s Community Programme continues to thrive. This season\, visitors are able to discover more about the people who are part of this pioneering initiative through Hand-Made\, a collection of 120 photographic portraits. In recent years\, the Community Programme has focused on creating exhibitions that display artworks created by its members\, however this year we highlight its collaborative nature. The close-up photos of hands showcase our inclusive and creative community of artists. \nHand-Made takes inspiration from artworks displayed in Seeing Each Other: Portraits of Artists; in particular a photograph by Snowdon of sculptor Eduardo Paolozzi’s worn hands taken in 1988. As a collection of individual portraits\, Hand-Made presents hands that are used for creating\, caring\, holding\, protecting and living. Hands are both intimate and relatively anonymous and\, when presented as a set of photographs\, they symbolise the power of a shared experience. This collective artwork reflects how the Community Programme is unique in how it brings people together from different walks of life and experiences; the common thread being a shared interest in the arts. \n120 artists were involved in the creation of Hand-Made. Captured by photographer Tom Langford\, participants were given autonomy to decide how to place their hands and if they wanted to hold an object. For many it was a new experience\, and certainly a role reversal to be the primary subject of a portrait. A number of them chose to include art materials and artwork in their portraits to identify their own practice and share their experience of being a member of the group.
