SUMMARY:Personalise with Clay Workshop at Pallant House Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Create a personalised portrait pot with ceramicist Catherine Claasen. \nJoin us for a hands-on ceramics workshop where you’ll design and craft a unique clay cylinder\, bringing it to life with expressive facial features inspired by portraiture. Under the expert guidance of ceramicist Catherine Claasen\, you’ll learn essential pottery techniques and explore the use of colourful underglazes and slips to give your portrait pot a personality of its own. Your finished piece will be fired for later collection. \nThe workshop begins with an introduction to the basics of working with clay. You’ll roll\, measure\, and cut clay slabs to form a cylinder\, attaching a base using the traditional score and slip method. \nNext\, you’ll visit the Seeing Each Other: Portraits of Artists exhibition for inspiration\, where you can sketch ideas for your pot. Back in the studio\, you’ll cut and shape the facial details from clay slabs and attach them to your cylinder. Finally\, you’ll bring your creation to life by decorating it with vibrant slips and underglazes\, adding personality and colour to your portrait pot. \nPlease be advised that your pot will remain at the gallery to be dried\, bisque fired\, glazed with a clear glaze and fired by Catherine\, which may take up to 3 weeks. You will be notified when it is ready to collect from the Gallery. \nThis workshop costs £95 and can be booked here.

SUMMARY:Some Men in London: Peter Parker in Conversation with Simon Martin
DESCRIPTION:Join author Peter Parker\, in conversation with Gallery Director Simon Martin\, as they discuss Peter’s book Some Men in London. \nThis two-volume anthology chronicles the history and reality of life for queer men in the capital between the end of the Second World War in 1945 and the partial decriminalisation of homosexuality in 1967. \nSeveral artists featured in our latest exhibition appear in the book\, which also draws upon private letters and diaries\, police and court records\, parliamentary reports\, newspaper and magazine articles\, medical journals\, films\, plays novels and poetry. It covers a wide range of viewpoints\, from both those who attacked homosexuality to those who campaigned for its decriminalisation. While detailing a community at constant risk of arrest or blackmail\, it also describes an often joyous subculture that thrived in the capital’s pubs\, clubs\, cafés and more public places of assignation. Meanwhile\, many people were unaware of\, or blind to\, the extent to which gay men enriched mainstream culture. \nPursuing this theme\, Simon and Peter will discuss not only the painters who feature in the anthology and the exhibition\, but consider other artists who made queer desire visible at a time when acting on those desires could land men in prison. \nAfter the talk\, you will be able to purchase a copy of Some Men in London and have it signed by the author. \nThis talk is part of our monthly series of Thursday Lates. Visitors are invited to enjoy our galleries and visit this season’s temporary exhibitions\, including Seeing Each Other: Portraits of Artists\, after hours and engage with other activities throughout the evening including a show and tell in the Library\, tour and drop-in life drawing workshop. \nTickets cost £18 and can be booked here.

SUMMARY:Hand-Made at Pallant House Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Inspired by Seeing Each Other: Portraits of Artists\, artists in the Gallery’s Community Programme have reimagined their own self-portraits. \n\n\nNow in its 23rd year\, Pallant House Gallery’s Community Programme continues to thrive. This season\, visitors are able to discover more about the people who are part of this pioneering initiative through Hand-Made\, a collection of 120 photographic portraits. In recent years\, the Community Programme has focused on creating exhibitions that display artworks created by its members\, however this year we highlight its collaborative nature. The close-up photos of hands showcase our inclusive and creative community of artists. \nHand-Made takes inspiration from artworks displayed in Seeing Each Other: Portraits of Artists; in particular a photograph by Snowdon of sculptor Eduardo Paolozzi’s worn hands taken in 1988. As a collection of individual portraits\, Hand-Made presents hands that are used for creating\, caring\, holding\, protecting and living. Hands are both intimate and relatively anonymous and\, when presented as a set of photographs\, they symbolise the power of a shared experience. This collective artwork reflects how the Community Programme is unique in how it brings people together from different walks of life and experiences; the common thread being a shared interest in the arts. \n120 artists were involved in the creation of Hand-Made. Captured by photographer Tom Langford\, participants were given autonomy to decide how to place their hands and if they wanted to hold an object. For many it was a new experience\, and certainly a role reversal to be the primary subject of a portrait. A number of them chose to include art materials and artwork in their portraits to identify their own practice and share their experience of being a member of the group.

SUMMARY:Rana Begum: No.1367 Mesh at Pallant House Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Acclaimed visual artist Rana Begum RA transforms our historic staircase with No.1367 Mesh\, her iconic suspended\, colourful mesh clusters\, creating a vibrant blend of history and contemporary art. \n\n\nThe monumental installation\, No.1367 Mesh\, crafted specifically for our historic staircase\, features Begum’s iconic colourful mesh clusters (often referred to as ‘clouds’). Each unique configuration brings vibrant colour and organic forms to the 18th-century townhouse\, blending history and contemporary art. The gridded material will spill over the landing balcony and through the middle of the staircase. It will allow visitors to experience the artwork from multiple angles. \nRana Begum’s work is known for blurring the boundaries between sculpture\, painting\, and architecture. It will bring a unique harmony of light\, texture\, and geometry to the Gallery. Begum draws inspiration from urban landscapes and traditional Islamic art\, using light as a fundamental medium to create immersive visual experiences. \nJoin us from 20 July to experience the magic of Rana Begum’s latest creation. In 2025 Rana Begum will be curating an exhibition drawn from the Pallant House Gallery collection to complement her installation.
