Chichester950 Celebrations

| January 2025

In 2025, Chichester Cathedral will mark an extraordinary milestone – 950 years as a centre of faith, culture, and community in the heart of our city. To celebrate this historic anniversary, an exciting programme of events, exhibitions and performances will run throughout the year, culminating in a breathtaking light show in October.

A Year of Celebrations

The Chichester950 programme will showcase the Cathedral’s rich history while offering something for everyone to enjoy. Whether you’re a local resident or visiting the city, you’ll find a range of inspiring and engaging events to join in the celebrations.

At the heart of the year-long festivities is Religion, Rebellion & Reformation, an exhibition running from 14th February to 15th November 2025. Featuring fascinating artefacts from across the Diocese of Chichester, spanning East and West Sussex. Each object reveals remarkable moments and people from history.

Chichester Cathedral’s renowned musical heritage will take centre stage on Saturday 17th May with Together in Unity, a concert marking the 60th anniversary of Leonard Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms. This special performance will also feature a newly commissioned choral composition, celebrating the Cathedral’s enduring legacy in music.

Community Festivities

On Sunday 15th June, TrinityFest on the Green will bring the city together for a vibrant celebration of the Feast of the Holy Trinity, to which the Cathedral is dedicated. Expect live music, delicious food, and a festive atmosphere in the heart of Chichester.

Finally, from 24th to 31st October, the Chichester950 celebrations will conclude with a stunning light and sound installation that will transform the Cathedral. This immersive display will bring its 950-year history to life in an unforgettable experience for all ages.

Looking Ahead

The Very Reverend Dr Edward Dowler, Dean of Chichester, reflects on this momentous occasion:

“It is a privilege to join the Cathedral at this exciting time. In addition to a range of services, we are delighted to host an exhibition showcasing treasures from across Sussex, a concert celebrating our musical heritage, city-centre festivities, and an immersive light show. These events offer something for everyone while encouraging us to reflect on the Cathedral’s legacy and look ahead to its future.”

Chichester Cathedral’s 950th anniversary is a unique opportunity to celebrate its rich history and vibrant role in the community. Whether you’re captivated by history, inspired by music, or simply looking for a fun day out, 2025 will be a year to remember in Chichester.
