Religion, Rebellion & Reformation: The Exhibition
For 950 years Chichester Cathedral has played a vital role in the city of Chichester. Since it was built in 1075 it has shaped the face of our area, transforming it from a rural market town to the city we know and love today.
From pilgrims making the journey to the shrine of St Richard, to 18th century men and women making use of its library at a time where access to resources was scarce. Chichester Cathedral has been a beacon at the heart of the city, used for protection, education and worship for more than nine centuries.
The Cathedral is marking its significant anniversary with a special exhibition exploring the history of faith and humanity in our local area. Religion, Rebellion & Reformation, showcases artefacts, treasures and stories contributed by local parishes and community groups throughout Sussex. Curated by the Cathedral’s Canon Treasurer, the Reverend Canon Vanessa Baron, the exhibition has been designed to bring together 950 years of Sussex heritage, with pieces sourced from churches, archives and libraries across the Diocese of Chichester which spans more than 100 miles.
Visitors can enjoy rare treasures including medieval Bishops’ rings, a 12th-century reliquary, a 15th-century theological treatise and a Bible carried into the trenches during World War I. The artefacts are coupled with fascinating and often moving human stories from across the centuries.
Although centred around themes of religion, the exhibition is not just about faith, it explores extraordinary people from our past and their responses to hardship, conflict and change. Among the many stories told, visitors will have the chance to uncover the incredible tale of the nuns of East Grinstead who risked their lives to care for the poor and needy, to learn about the Brighton clergyman who transformed the city by providing affordable housing for the poor, and discover the story of Mistress Ann Tree, one of the Sussex Martyrs, who was executed for her faith in the 16th century.
Running from 14th February to 15th November 2025, Religion, Rebellion & Reformation is part of the Cathedral’s Chichester950 celebrations. In addition to the exhibition there are many other anniversary events set to take place throughout 2025 including an immersive light show, special concerts, TrinityFest on the Green and much more.
