What if…

…you rediscovered your high street?

Chichester isn’t just full of pretty streets and historic sights – it’s a city alive with independent spirit. It’s the barber who remembers your last haircut. The gallery where the owner knows every artist by name. The vintage shop where you never leave empty-handed.

This July, as part of our 2025 Proudly Chichester, Proudly Independent campaign, we’re celebrating the businesses that make our city centre more than just a place to shop – but a place to explore, discover and connect.

We’re asking one simple question:

What if… the answer to your next need, wish or whim was waiting just around the corner?

Here’s a guide to some of the indie businesses bringing those moments to life.

What if… you need a fresh look?

Maybe it’s a new haircut. A facial. A moment to press pause and feel like yourself again.

At Hair on West Street, set inside a beautiful Grade II-listed building, you’ll find superb service and the highest quality of hairdressing in a space that’s both stylish and calm. It’s small, it’s family-run and every appointment feels personal.

Across town, Hannah Prior Beauty on East Street offers everything from brow shaping to advanced skincare. It’s where beauty meets wellbeing – delivered with skill, care and a warm welcome.

And when your wardrobe’s calling out for something different? Vintro in Eastgate Square is packed with vintage gems guaranteed to give you a new look, with a sustainable, pre-loved twist. Or wander over to Almshouse Vintage on The Hornet – where the rails are filled with retro pieces and every visit feels like a lucky find.

What if… you don’t want to cook tonight?

You’re tired. You’re hungry. And you deserve better than a ready meal.

Craving something bold and flavourful? Miso Asia in St Pancras is a celebration of pan-Asian cuisine, with rich, soulful dishes that bring the warmth of the East to West Sussex.

New arrival in Jays Walk CJ’s Bistro, now open in Sandra’s old premises, brings fresh energy to the local food scene, with a menu designed for both relaxed lunches and low-key dinners. It’s the kind of place where you can BYO and let someone else do the cooking – with heart and flair.

What if… you just want a coffee and a moment to breathe?

Not every outing has to be a full meal – sometimes, it’s about good coffee, great music, or a peaceful hour over lunch.

Step into Naima at Cathedral Courtyard – part music lounge, part high-end coffee bar. Their cocktails are as bold as their playlist, and every detail – from the beans to the beats – is expertly curated. Coffee in the morning, DJs by night – it’s a uniquely Chichester blend.

On Little London, Little London Café serves up generous, home-style comfort food with friendly service and an easygoing charm. It’s the perfect pit stop when you need a pause.

What if… your home needs a little love?

A room that’s not quite right. A kitchen that doesn’t work for your life anymore. A wardrobe that never quite fits.

44 design architect design

44 Design, an architectural design team on South Street, blends creative vision with practical know-how. This father-and-son duo helps you bring ideas to life – from extensions to rethinks – while cutting through the jargon.

On The Hornet, Kingswell Kitchens and Bedrooms offer everything from sleek, high-gloss to classic solid wood designs. Whether you’re dreaming of a new kitchen or upgrading your bedroom, their team makes the process enjoyable and entirely tailored.

And for clever storage? Chichester Bedrooms on Crane Street creates made-to-measure fitted wardrobes with premium finishes to suit your style

What if… you need a new hobby?

Sometimes, you just want a project to get stuck into.

At Comic, Games and Coffee on North Street, stories unfold in every corner – from epic graphic novels to thrilling board games. It’s a haven for gamers, collectors and curious minds alike, with a cracking coffee to go with it.

Peppy Beads in Eastgate Square is a jewellery maker’s dream – packed with gemstones, charms and all the tools you need to make something beautiful with your own hands.

And over at Art for All, it’s not just about art on walls – it’s about finally framing those family photos, brightening a room with new prints, or supporting an artist whose work makes you feel something. Their framing service is trusted and tailored, and the gallery always has something new to fall in love with.

Whether you’re curious about trying something new on wheels or looking to rekindle an old passion, ESP in Cathedral Courtyard is the perfect starting point. Supporting skaters, rollerbladers, BMX riders and scooter-lovers since 1996, they’ve helped generations become part of Chichester’s skate scene. It’s more than a shop – it’s a community hub that’s been rolling strong for nearly 30 years.

What if… you need the perfect gift, fast?

Someone’s birthday snuck up on you? You’ve been invited to something? Or you just want to treat someone (or yourself) for no reason at all?

The Sussex Bookshop on South Street is beautifully stocked with hand-picked editions, collector’s favourites and literary gems. It’s the kind of shop you walk into for a gift – and leave with a treat for yourself, too.

Just five minutes from Eastgate Square, The Almshouse Arcade is a world of its own – an eclectic collection of independent retailers, each with its own story and speciality. For beautiful, handcrafted homeware, Chairchester creates bespoke upholstery and lampshades full of charm and colour. Angels Crystals & All Things Pachamama offers a wonderful mix of crystals, sage sticks and meaningful gifts, while Time Machine Records is a treasure trove for music lovers, packed with rare vinyl and nostalgia.

Every stall is independent. Every purchase supports a dream.

So what if… you tried something new this July and beyond?

Chichester’s independent businesses are full of ideas, solutions and surprises – all wrapped up in the kind of care and character you simply won’t find anywhere else.

This summer, pop in. Have a conversation. Try something different. And ask yourself:
What if you didn’t need to go anywhere else?
